iTwin Multi functionality announced

iTwin, the company behind the world’s first ‘limitless’ secure USB device for remote file access, recently announced their spanking new iTwin Multi functionality. This is a free iTwin upgrade that allows users to share files stashed on a computer with multiple people – simultaneously. The iTwin Multi will enable multiple users and workgroups to safely connect multiple iTwins to the same computer for remote access, not to mention being able to edit and share files as well without having to go through the headaches associated with email, VPN, or remote access software.

Take for example, with the iTwin Multi, field sales reps are able to remotely download or upload the latest confidential client contracts and proposals. On a similar scale, tiny businesses including CPA firms are able to securely share large accounting files in addition to other sensitive data with multiple clients. iTwin boasts of being the first and only remote file access solution which is 100% Plug ’N’ Play, where it delivers two-factor authentication and end-to-end encryption.

ePawn Arena set to be a game-changer

I’m sure that by now you are probably sick of hearing the term “game changer”, and I apologize for using this buzzword in the title. However, I guarantee you will like what this post is about.

While wandering the booths at CES last week, I discovered the ePawn Arena. It uses ePawn tracking technology for a large 26 inch IPS screen, which enables you to place game pieces for a very interesting gaming experience.

The demonstration showed an iPhone plugged into this thing, and the user could play a game using physical markers like chess pieces. The touchscreen seemed to know where these pieces were, and it creates a rather interesting environment for gaming.

The ePawn Arena is designed to link to smartphone, tablet, or PC and can be used for role-playing games and board games. This isn’t the first time that I have seen board games mixed with touchscreen interactive devices. After all, there was the Game Changer and Wowee’s AppGear, both of which had prominent appearances at CES.

The ePawn Arena is expected to be available in the “second half of the year”. I do’t seem to have a price, but the flyer I have on the product promises “patented technology provides state of the art performances at an affordable price”. Hopefully the average household can afford something such as this.

HP ENVY 14 Spectre Unveiled!

HP has taken advantage of CES 2012 to be the platform where they will roll out their latest masterpiece which comes in the form of the ENVY 14 Spectre. Take a look at it above and you will know what I mean – this nifty little consumer Ultrabook that resides in the premium category is capable of commanding anyone’s attention thanks to its clever and unparalleled use of glass. Couple that with the kind of stunning performance that you thought would exist only on a desktop, and you could very well have a winner here.

The HP ENVY 14 Spectre will rely on lightweight, scratch-resistant glass on the lid, display, palmrest and HP ImagePad, clearly making it an industry first. The 14-inch screen that is located within a 13.3-inch body – while it does not really make sense at all when you read it, it does mean one thing – seeing is believing, and you might want to get your booty down to the nearest HP showroom when this arrives.

The HP Spectre’s high-definition HP Radiance Display is said to offer some of the industry’s highest resolution and richest color for better brightness and wider viewing angles compared to traditional notebook displays, and there is also a matching audio-grade speaker mesh alongside Beats Audio, an exclusive, high-performance technology that was developed by HP and Beats by Dr. Dre. To up the ante in the class department, the HP Spectre also comes with an aluminum analog volume dial.

Expect the HP ENVY 14 Spectre to arrive in the US this coming February 8th for $1,399.99 onwards.

Dell XPS 13 laptop is part of the Ultrabook Brigade!

It seems that this is set to be the year of the Ultrabook, as companies that dabble with notebooks churn out one model after another with the intention of eating into Apple’s MacBook Air market. Dell does not want to be left out of the game either, and their latest foray into the Ultrabook market would come in the form of the Dell XPS 13. The XPS 13 is said to be the most compact 13.3″ Ultrabook to date, boasting an edge-to-edge glass, near “frameless” display, coupled with all-day battery life (claimed, and not tested yet) as well as all the relevant bells and whistles, crammed into a body that tips the scales at just 2.99 lbs, while measuring under 02.5″ at its thinnest point. Let us look at what else the Dell XPS 13 holds underneath the hood after the jump.

You will find the XPS 13 carry a choice of second-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, where its graphical capability provided by an Intel HD 3000 graphics chipset, while its 13.3″ high definition WLED display has a 300-nit display. Storage-wise, your budget determines just how much space you have – you will have to make do with either a 128GB or 256GB solid state drive. Just in case that is not enough, another 100GB of cloud storage is made available through Dell DataSafe for seamless content backup – for free, of course. Another nice touch from Dell would be a 12-month Skype Premium subscription to help you stay in touch, as Dell probably knows the reason why you got something so light is because you do a lot of traveling – hence making sure you can keep in touch with your loved ones at all times.

The Dell XPS 13 is truly a sight to behold, boasting an edge-to-edge display with hardened Gorilla Glass, a full-size backlit keyboard with a large glass touchpad with integrated buttons and multi-gestural support, and a 47WHr 6-cell battery that is said to offer up to nearly nine hours of juice. It is interesting to note that its design allows the 13.3-inch high definition display with slim bezel fit within a body size that is similar to the form factor of an 11-inch product.

Those with a heart for the environment can also make this purchase with peace of mind, since Dell designed the XPS 13 with the environment in mind by including energy-efficient LED displays that do not have any mercury or arsenic, while Dell also ensured that harmful toxins such as Brominated Flame Retardants and Polyvinyl Chloride (BFR/PVCs) are eliminated during the manufacturing process. The packaging material of the XPS 13 is also green, as it is shipped in many locations with sustainably harvested bamboo packaging material. Other hardware specifications include a 1.3-megapixel webcam, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, and 4GB RAM. Prices start from $999 onwards, depending on the configuration.

Justbeats by Dr. Dre is a Best Buy exclusive

Teen sensation Justin Bieber has yet another channel of income – it is pretty insane to see young pups these days raking in the dough like nobody’s business, when back in our day, we had to break our backs just to earn a quarter of a dollar an hour. Well, as mentioned earlier, Justin Bieber will have a very Merry Christmas as he has yet another source of dough to rely on, although we’re pretty sure that profits from this will not be as lucrative as that of his recording contracts.

The golden goose we’re talking about? Well, Justin Bieber has rolled out a new line of headphones, known as Justbeats by Dr. Dre. To make it all the more exclusive, you can only get it from Best Buy stores in the US and on BestBuy.com. It does seem to make sense though, as Justin Bieber is all about the music, and he sees this as an opportunity to team with Beats by Dr. Dre and Monster, where the latter is a global leader in high performance headphones and AV accessories.

Just how well does it perform? Well, it seems that each pair was specially engineered to help you feel the emotion that Justin wants each song to evoke. The headphones are also capable of expressing Justin’s signature style by offering both on-ear and in-ear versions in Justin’s favorite color – purple. The Justbeats by Dr. Dre Solo Headphone is going for $199.95 a pop, while iBeats by Dr. Dre Justbeats Edition is a whole lot cheaper at $119.95, where that will come with high tech features such as ControlTalk for you to pick up a phone call even when you’re enjoying his present and past hits.

Somehow, saying past hits for someone so young does seem pretty strange to roll off the tongue, as that normally applies to musical greats who have been around for decades. Well, if you’re a Justin Bieber fan, we are pretty sure that you will be able to drop off enough hints for your parents or elder siblings so that they can scurry to the nearest Best Buy outlet and pick up one of these puppies for you come Christmas day. What do you think? It is safe to say that this might just be the catalyst to kick start your love of expensive headphones, eh?

11-year old comes up with own iPad stand

There is just something precocious about 11-year olds and their imagination – at least we know one of them in the good ol’ USA is patriotic enough to observe that while many devices and other stuff are designed here, they are actually manufactured elsewhere. Of course, the economics of the situation might be a bit too heavy for him to understand at the moment, but at the very least, he is able to think out of the box by coming up with something that is made back in the US without losing any bit of functionality.

We’re talking about 11-year-old Dino Zaharakis, who intends to develop a stand that could place/remove a device without disconnecting its cable, hold a device with/without a skin in both portrait and landscape modes, have viewing angles that were optimized for video conferencing and manufactured back home, all the while being able to play nice with iPad, Kindle, nook, tablets, iPhone and other smartphones.

Dino actually came up with this iPad dock after seeing his dad use an impromptu one while discussing the family’s summer camp plans, where Dino quickly pointed out a bunch of design flaws while suggesting that he could do better. Naturally, his dad decided to challenge him, offering him a new phone if Dino could come up with an iPad dock and a web site. This catalyst caused Dino’s mind to move into high gear, where he manipulated pieces of aluminum stock from McMaster-Carr, using a Home Depot miter saw and a vise. He made several prototypes. There were three favorites in total, dubbed Curly 3 Stooges, Alpha Slick and Big Z.

The final prototype was created after merging the best features and capabilities of each prototype. This led Dino’s dad to bring him to Northampton Community College’s Fab Lab where they created 3D solid models using Solidworks and later created prototypes using a Dimension 3D printer. The dzdock One can be yours for $29.99, where it will come in black, white, silver, red, pink, lime and blue shades. With the promotional code of DZPRNEWS at www.buy.dzdock.com, you can bring this puppy home for $10 less – and this offer is good until Christmas, so what are you waiting for?

Money, Money, Money For The Holidays!

We're already on the season of holidays! And this season is usually termed as the 'season of expenses'! Though we are receiving Christmas bonuses or 13th and 14th month pays, still it seems these moneys were not that enough to sustain our expenses!

During this season, almost all of us were buying for a new clothes, spending money in buying gifts for our friends, relatives, godchildren, and other members of the family, attending parties, and a lot more of different expenditures! Sometimes, it feels that the money we received from our bonuses were now that enough to feed those expenses!

Well, this is now the time that we need to knock, knock our banks to get some money for these expenditures! But the question goes, are your savings enough to buy those gifts or spend many for your personal needs?!

Some of us seek cash advance loans in many banking institutions to sustain our needs! Credit cards, money cooperation, or any other institutions that provide easy money are always there to provide amounts that we need!

Hmmm...some of my friends told me that there were many types of making cash advances. Of course, one type of it is the cash advance provided by our credits cards. Instantly, we can get the amounts we need through ATM or through over the counters! But are you familiar with the so-called payday loans no faxing? It definitely gives us a loan corresponding to our daily wage! How about a no fax payday loans? Whatever it is, the good thing is that it gives us instant cash to spend!

But other persons didn't anymore need to borrow money from banks or get some loans or cash advances. Yup, they were people who already born with a golden spoon on their mouth! Persons that didn't know how to lessen their billions and billions of money! How I wish I'm one of them!

But then, what ever our status in life, let's still be thankful for what we have! Spend wisely! Happy Holidays to everyone! C",)

Cellphone Voice Changer

Come time to call for that ransom, you can’t have the listener recognizing your voice. Now there are all sorts of voice changers for your home phone, but you need something for when you’re on the road. Thankfully, Amazon is to the rescue as always. I haven’t the faintest idea what the practical application would be for a Cellphone Voice Changer, but there could be a perfectly legitimate reason for it. Just in case though, if anyone asks I’d mumble something about it being just some silly cellphone accessory. Most people might frown on you carrying one around.

Since it is a $21 set, it might be more similar to something you’d find at the joke shop as opposed to the secret spy shop. Which might make it better suited for prank calling your friends. You can even keep them on their toes since it has 4 voice change options. It also has an included battery that offers 30 hours of use.(Source:Bookofjoe)

Whistle Keyfinder Set of 2

Most of us would have experienced the sinking feeling of having lost our set of keys one time or another, hoping that some kind soul would return the key to us upon finding it, or for us to find it years later in some unexpected place. Why not take no chances with the Whistle Keyfinder Set of 2? It works slightly differently compared to all the other keyfinders in the market, as all you need to do is give a nice whistle and the Keyfinder, should it detect your whistle, will light up and beep noisily until you successfully locate the merry bunch of keys. Of course, it would help if the batteries in the Whistle Keyfinder Set of 2 have enough juice to work, so make sure you test the batteries from time to time and replace when necessary. The Whistle Keyfinder Set of 2 will retail for £5.99.

HP Unveils New Plug and Print Technology

HP is a household name by now where printer technology is concerned, and the company could stumble onto something new with their HP LaserJet Pro printer line that has a spanking new ”plug and print” technology
which enables customers to begin printing in just 2 minutes from any computer without the need to go through a pesky CD installation process. Basically, all you need to do is hook up the printer to a machine via USB and let the printer’s built-in driver perform the installation process to get you printing in no time at all. This new process is called HP Smart Install, and we will look at new monochrome printers equipped with such technology in the extended post.

The HP LaserJet Pro P1100 Printer series will come with HP Smart Install, and are the most energy-efficient laser printer on the planet as at point of publishing. Apart from that, the other series that will feature this plug and print technology includes the HP LaserJet Pro M1130/M1210 Multifunction Printer (MFP) and the HP LaserJet Pro P1566/P1606dn printer. The new HP LaserJet Pro lineup will all come in a very business-like design, featuring a sleek, black finish without compromising on performance as it delivers professional, cost-effective results while enabling small and midsize businesses (SMBs) to reduce their environmental impact.

The HP Auto-On Technology which has been incorporated is able to intelligently sense activity, including knowing when a print job is sent to the printer, where it will automatically wake the device up from its “off” mode. This will work hand in hand with HP Auto-Off Technology that automatically adjusts the power settings and turns the printer off when there is no print
activity. Research has shown that such technology enables the new HP LaserJet P1100 Printer series to save up to 72% on energy costs versus its predecessor, although real world usage would probably yield a lower result as with most cases. Price start from $129 upwards, depending on the series as well as printer type selected. (Press Release)

USB Alarm for your notebook

This has to be the strangest form of protection for your laptop that you could manage to buy. With this around if anyone goes tampering with your USB ports, everyone within hearing range will know about it. They’ll also know if you forget about the alarm and just start unplugging things at random, which tends to happen when you’ve been up too late working on your computer.

You just plug it into the USB port and turn it on. Then if someone tries to unplug things in order to easily steal your laptop, an alarm will sound. The big catch is, if you have an observant criminal, all they have to do is shut off the side switch. Then again, if you’re rushing to stash a laptop, a little white box might fly under the radar. You can purchase this USB Notebook Crime Prevention Sensor for ¥2,400.00 or about $26 through Geek Stuff 4U. (Source: TechFresh)

Windup Robot USB Hub

The best kind of gadgets are the ones that give you something to play with while you’re supposed to be busy doing something else. After all, we all have those moments when our brains get absolutely fried. In those cases you really just need a toy to let your mind go absolutely blank for a while. Thankfully there are things like this USB hub that have a real function, besides the fact that they’re a fun little robot toy.

Just pop open their front and you’ll have 2 different ports to plug things into. Then close him up and he turns into a brightly colored wind-up toy. Just spin him up and he’ll give you plenty of amusement. Of course this comes from a Japanese company, so it’s going to be a whole lot harder to get your hands on. Then again, thankfully there are a whole lot of websites anymore that are dedicated to getting Japanese gadgets to the rest of the world, so maybe we’ll get lucky on this one. Sony Ericsson Zylo with Walkman cellphone

Sony Ericsson is back with a bang, this time round they have expanded their Walkman line of cellphones (guess the Cybershot fans will have to take a back seat for this time), where the Zylo is the latest model to be introduced. This next generation Walkman phone will not break the bank if you are interested in picking one up, where it not only offers the best musical experience from a Walkman handset, but will also merge both music with social networking in a single device. That’s right, you will be able to catch up with family and friends over Twitter and Facebook among others using but a few button presses, while enjoying your favorite tunes in the background. Apart from that, the Zylo will also sport the TrackID feature which lets you access the name and artist of a track which you currently hear.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo will sport the human curvature design which is not consistent across the whole Sony Ericsson portfolio. Beautiful and timeless, it also comes with an ergonomic keypad that makes using the handset a joy. Apart from that, the Sony Ericsson Zylo with Walkman will also come preloaded with sounds to spice things up when you’re on an undercover mission – after all, you can pretend that you are still at work, walking on the street or in a restaurant when talking to your other half, although we wouldn’t recommend you build a relationship based on mistrust.

Interestingly enough, the FLAC format will make a debut on this handset, letting consumers experience superb lossless quality sound, but it will definitely take up much more storage space than a regular MP3 file. With PlayNow support, you can shop round the clock in a virtual music store, as long as your budget permits. Other features include connectivity to Flickr and Picasa as well as the ability to upload video clips to YouTube straight away with but a couple of clicks. The Sony Ericsson Zylo with Walkman supports UMTS HSPA 900/2100 and GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS HSPA 850/900/1800/1900 and GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 networks, where it will hit the market this Q3 with Jazz Black, Chacha Silver and Swing Pink colors to choose from. Car Power Charger Adapter

If you were ever wondering just how to overload your car’s cigarette lighter, this would do it. This extension cord will allow for you to plug in all sorts of things inside of your car. It’s the perfect addition for anyone that finds themselves living out of their car on a very regular basis. It even has a tiny little fan thrown in, you know, just in case.

It has 3 different plugs and in addition to that a single USB port. I’m not sure what I would do with that many outlets, but it’s great for the overachieving gadget addict. The whole strip has an on off switch, so you don’t have to unplug it to cut the power to all of your gadgets. In order to get your own it’ll cost you $31. 69 through UXSight.

E-ink concept could change the face of newspapers

I think we all know that newspapers are dying. However, it may be something that will always be around in some form, like radio.

This is a concept newspaper that uses E-ink with a semi-transparent surface. Basically, it is creates a display on a surface that looks just like a newspaper, but won’t leave any black ink residue on your hands.

There is a video after the break if you want to see it for yourself. It uses a fingerprint identifier to see who the user is, and then it looks like you are surfing the web.

I believe that this is what Apple wanted to do with the iPad, but bigger. Considering that the iPad already does what the iPhone can do, but bigger, maybe this will be the iPaper. iPaper. I like that, and it could easily catch on.

However, I’m not certain whether people will open up to a huge folding display that is actually larger than most mobile devices. After all, newspapers are very large and bulky, and they take up way to much tabletop space. We might be at the point where people prefer to have something on a smaller screen rather than a larger one.

Still, I guess I like any technology that looks like it is out of Minority Report, and showed up a few times in that film.

Robot Report: Getting more human all the time

The last time we talked about Robovie, we mentioned that he looked like he was ready to take over all of us fleshy humans.

It would appear that Robovie-R, a robot that is designed to assist the elderly, has been upgraded to Version 3 which now stands 120 cm tall and weighs 43 kg.

You can see a video of it after the jump. If you really want to be freaked out, I highly suggest watching the video of this freaky mouth that is able to do vowel sounds with its robo-lips.

Sorry I don’t have more information about the mouth robot, here is some more specs about the Robovie. It has eleven touch sensors, two USB cameras (one for each eye), two mono mics (one for each ear) 17 joints, a speaker in the mouth, networking capability, and can travel 2.5 km per hour.

I think it is proof that robots are getting more human all the time. In fact, let’s combine the mouth with the body of the Robovie. Or maybe we should just stick with the speaker on the mouth, as the robo-mouth just freaks me out.

Sorry if I can’t get over that mouth-bot. It just looks like something from The City of Lost Children or something. However, that Robovie could assist the elderly, and that’s good, right? I’m trying to dispel my robot fears.

T-OLED makes transparent glass a display

I think we all know that we are heading for an era where every pane of glass will be a display of some type. I mean, if there is one thing science fiction has taught us: no glass shall go to waste on something as mundane as a window.

It would appear that some Korean technology could make this a reality with transparent OLED or T-OLED. The purpose is to make a touch-sensitive transcreen.

I believe the intention is to make something that would be put on a windshield. I’ve heard that Microsoft has been working on that one.

For some reason, I always see this technology applied to automobile windshields. It’s like we can’t tolerate dashboard instrumentation anymore, or something. Yeah, I suppose we just got to have heads-up displays.

Most of these displays have involved some sort of tiny projector, which has been the only way you could get images on glass. I don’t see how the image on the device in the photo, but all those circuit boards below might be an indicator.

Personally, I want to see this on every window, mirror, or any other place where there is glass of any type. Of course, call me a dreamer. Of course, OLED technology is very expensive. Have you seen the price of OLED TVs these days?

Bionaire Litter Box cleans air

The major reason I don’t have a cat in my small apartment is because I remember all to well how much a litter box can stink up a full-sized house. I couldn’t imagine what it’d do to my place and frankly, I’d rather not find out. Those of you that live in small places or just tend to forget to clean out the litter box might be interested in this new solution. It’ll help make sure that the smell stays under control at all times.

This litter box has a built-in air purifier that quietly circulates all of that air that your cat keeps stinking up. It’s quiet enough that it won’t scare off your cat either. Antenna Disguised as Picture Frame

A TV antenna is not something that’s typically left in plain sight if it can be helped. Usually they’re a bit on the ugly side and everyone can identify one on sight. If you don’t want to leave out an antenna that announces its presence in your living room, you might want to pick this one up. Instead of being too obvious, it looks like nothing more than a normal picture frame. Not a digital one, but at least it’ll show off one of your pictures.

The antenna can receive DAB, DVB-T & ATSC signals. It’ll also work out just fine to pick up those analog TV signals. It claims it’ll even work for those that in the past have had to rely on the large outdoor antennas. It has a USB interface as well as an optional power supply. It also of course has low noise and low distortion amplifiers. It’ll work with either your TV or PC. You can purchase one for $39.99 through Clixxun.

Netgear unveils new networking accessories for home theaters

Netgear has rolled out a bunch of new networking accessories which will target the home theater market in the form of the High-Performance Wireless-N HD Home Theater Kit (WNHDB3004) as well as the Universal WiFi Internet Adapter for Home Theater Devices and Gaming Consoles (WNCE2001). The former is a carrier-grade, tested and proven solution for wirelessly playing multiple jitter-free 1080p HD video and audio streams to virtually every room in your home flawlessly, boasting twice the performance and range of solutions in the market currently. As for the latter, it is capable of delivering Wireless-N performance of up to 300 Mbps via its Ethernet port of consumer electronic (CE) devices including Internet TVs, game consoles and Blu-ray players among others.

These devices are currently on display at CeBIT in Germany, just in case you were interested in getting a hands-on and will be paying the trade show a visit. We will take a look at the High-Performance Wireless-N HD Home Theater Kit (WNHDB3004) first, where you get multiple streams of simultaneous, jitter-free 1080p HD video sans the hassle of wires regardless of how many rooms your house has – barring the fact that you live in a palace, of course. This is touted to be the only solution currently available which has been tested to provide sustained throughput of HD streams in excess of 40 Mbps 99.9% of the time, despite going through multiple walls. Sounds neat, eh? This kit comes with a couple of two High-Performance Wireless-N HD Home Theater Adapters (WNHD3004), where set-up is a snap thanks to its plug and play capability.

As for the Universal WiFi Internet Adapter, this USB-powered device won’t require you to tote around an extra power adapter or cable, and that alone makes it more visually appealing since it remains close and tight to your machine. Thanks to the inclusion of the Netgear Push ‘N’ Connect technology and set up process that doesn’t require any CD at all, this is a true plug and play experience. Expect the Universal WiFi Internet Adapter for Home Theater Devices and Gaming Consoles (WNCE2001) to hit May for $79, while the High-Performance Wireless-N HD Home Theater Kit (WNHDB3004) will follow up sometime in Q3 for a yet unannounced price point.

Eneloop USB Booster Stick

Considering all of the strange iPhone accessories out there, I wouldn’t blame you if your mind was in the gutter when you saw the picture of this booster stick. After all, it’s not like there isn’t already a sexual iPhone accessory out there. This one is perfectly innocent though and it’ll even work with more than your iPhone. This small tube will make sure that none of your electronics stay dead while you’re away from your computer.

It comes with 2 Eneloop Nickel-Metal Hydride rechargeable batteries. Those small rechargeable batteries will give an approximate run time of 90 minutes. It does not come with a USB cable, you just use the cable that your device came with. It’ll work with anything from music players, to cellphones and onto portable game consoles. The Japanese gadget can be found through the Japan Trend Shop for $45.

Solar Powered Window Alarm

I’m always all about any gadget that can function well, while being powered by nothing more than the sun. It cuts down on batteries and it’s basically the lazy man’s way of being eco-friendly. In that you really don’t have to put in a whole lot of effort and you’re managing to at least help to not make the earth any worse than its current state. That being said, I’m not entirely sold on this solar gadget. Since it is an alarm, it almost seems like it’s advertising its presence to burglars.

Sure, it’ll go off anytime someone opens the window at all. However, I’m curious if someone were to break a windowpane next to the solar panel and were to just shut it off or tear it off, if it would do any good. Then again many people looking at it from the outside would probably think it’s just a harmless solar gadget probably charging your cellphone. Which if that’s the case, it could still work. These window alarms come in twin packs for £24.99 or about $38.

Aluratek e-book reader, the Libre, hands-on

The Libre isn’t the first e-book reader that I have reviewed, and I must admit that I have reviewed few of them. I didn’t find the Libre from Aluratek to be different from the last one that I reviewed.

Then again, last year brought about more e-readers than I think the general public really wanted, as most were only turning to Amazon’s Kindle to satisfy their e-reading needs. I suppose that this will be the year of the tablet and its derivatives.

But I digress. I will discuss what the Libre does that is different. According to the company, the Libre’s 5 inch black and white screen has “the same appearance and readibility” of printed paper. Since it has no backlight, it is just like reading a book. I think that most other e-book readers can do that, actually.

I do like the way that the Libre wants the first-time e-book user to get reading. It is made to be set up to get an easy Internet connection so you can download many free titles from ebook sites from googlebooks.com and gutenberg.org. The Libre also comes with a 2GB SD Card with 100 titles on it. You can see a complete list here.

The battery life is good for 24 hours worth of reading, and it can also do music files. No big surprise there, as for the support of BMP, JPG, GIF, MP3, and animated GIF picture format. I do like the page turning controller on the left hand side, which feels a little like turning the pages of a real book.

You should be able to get the Aluratek Libre for about $150-$170 on Amazon, and many other retail stores.

Berlin Brain Computer Interface lets you play pinball, with your mind

This is an odd way to play pinball, don’t you think? Shouldn’t this man be standing in front of the machine? And what’s with that wired bathing cap?

This is probably what I would have said if I was at CeBIT 2010 and passed by this display of the Berlin Brain-Computer Interface. As it turns out, this man is playing this game of pinball with his brain. I’m not saying that he’s really getting his head into the game, but his head is playing the game.

You can watch a video of the setup of this person in action after the jump. I really have no idea if this man is just some visitor to CeBIT or someone who works for the company, but you can watch him as they set him up to play pinball on this Addams Family themed pinball machine. Yeah, I would have chosen a different theme, but the multiple flippers does make it interesting.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really an explanation about how this works on the video, which has absolutely no voiceover narration. I have no idea if you have to think: “Left flipper, right flipper” to get it to work. I notice that this user has to manually start the ball rolling, and I’m guessing that mentally tilting is not an option.

I suppose we are probably looking at an age where arcade games make a comeback, and the players are jacked into them mentally. That, or come up with a console version of this mental controls. I suppose that this could be the next version of Project Natal.

Apple iPad to hit the US this April 3

It seems that in recent years, anything that Apple comes up with seems to generate a whole lot of publicity. We can’t really blame them for making good on their range of devices though, delivering quality as well as the most important of them all – a fantastic user experience which appeals to the broadest user base. Well, the iPad which was unveiled a couple of months ago certainly raised quite a furore amongst the general population, but there are also the fair share of detractors. Well, fans of the iPad will be pleased to know that the magical and revolutionary device is tipped to hit the US market on April 3rd, although this is limited to just its Wi-Fi models while others who want the high end Wi-Fi + 3G models will have to wait until the end of April. As for people living in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, they will be able to get their hands on the iPad in late April as well.

Too lazy to queue up at an Apple Store and fight with the crowd? You can always place your pre-order for both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store from March 12th onwards. With prices starting from $499 upwards, we do wonder whether the iPad will do well based on its merits alone and not because of all the hype generated over the past few months. To recap, the iPad is capable of letting users browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games and read ebooks among others. It measures all of 0.5″ thin which makes it a snap to slide it into a MacBook Air case without any trouble, while the 1.5 pounds weight makes it the thinnest and lightest device out there when compared to any netbook (of course, this is comparing apples and oranges – pun intended), since it can do many things the netbook already does.

Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-G10

While we looked at the Lumix DMC-G2 yesterday, here is yet another fellow Micro Four Thirds camera from the Japanese consumer electronics giant, Panasonic. We’re talking about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10 here, where it is touted to be the lightest digital interchangeable lens camera with a viewfinder in the world. Don’t be mistaken though – even though it is the lightest, that doesn’t mean all of its functionalities have been stripped away – no sir, the Lumix DMC-G10 comes packed with a host of advanced digital camera functions that were specially designed to be easy-to-use for users who are new to system cameras. Being compact and portable, the Lumix G10 is also able to record High Definition (HD) video in addition to snapping high-quality still images.

Using a mirrorless structure as part the Micro Four Thirds System standard, the G10 has eliminated a number of components that are found in a conventional interchangeable lens camera, where among these include the mirror box and optical viewfinder unit. Doing away with those allows it to obtain its status as being the lightest system camera in the world, and will feature the newly announced Lumix G VARIO 14-42mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S. lens that boasts a versatile zoom range of 14-42mm (35mm camera equivalent: 28-84mm) that makes it a snap to shoot a wide-range of scenes, from dynamic landscape to portrait.

Other features include iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, MEGA O.I.S. that helps prevent blurring from hand-shake, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Exposure, Intelligent Scene Selector, recording 1,280 x 720 HD video in Motion JPEG, QVGA, VGA and WVGA formats, an Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.), Face Recognition function, a Live View Finder at 202,000-dot resolution, a 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor and the new Venus Engine HD II. No idea on when it will hit the market, but both pricing and availability details will be unveiled a month before it is ready to arrive in store shelves near you. At least you can have a head start in saving up for one, eh?

ReviveLite II

The original ReviveLite would work fine for most people, but the down side of it is that it was pretty bulky. Not only did it keep an outlet covered, but it also had a dock off to the side of the outlet. With this 2nd edition ReviveLite it looks a whole lot more sleek and won’t be quite as much in the way. This new design makes a whole lot more sense than the old one did.

Just like the old one it offers a night light to make wandering around in the dark much easier. The smaller version has one other nice change, it has been designed to include a USB port. That USB port can charge all sorts of other gadgets, all the while you can be powering up your iPod or iPhone on the dock. Plus, since it’s so small, it’d be a very portable device to have around. You can purchase it for $24.99. Right now it’s available through Scosche, but throughout the spring it’ll start appearing at other retailers.

iPod Desktop Speaker, an Afforadable Gift

Finding affordable gifts for someone who is more into technology than anything else can sometimes seem to be a trying task. Luckily though there are some retailers happy to sell off speakers to go with your precious iPod or iPhone. With this speaker it’ll play your music, while also giving a spot to rest your iPod and leave it on display. You could easily see and flip through music while it’s hooked up to the speaker.

It’s not really something you carry everywhere with you. It would be nice to have sitting on a desk of some kind though. For students with cramped living conditions it would work out great. The device is meant for the iPhone or any of the iPods besides the Shuffle. It will hook up to any MP3 player though. In order to keep it running, it requires 4 AAA batteries. You can purchase the speaker in both red and black for $9.99 a piece through the container store.

Toshiba Qosmio X500 notebook

Toshiba is back with a brand new notebook for the masses which will be powered by the new Intel Core i7 processor. Known as the Qosmio X500 Series, it will be placed under the “enthusiast-class line of performance notebooks” that will target folks who thrive in high definition multimedia and gaming. On the outside you will notice a striking design which pleases the senses, where it will come loaded with premium technologies while the chassis will hold its fair share of impressive features within, offering hardcore gamers and digital content creators a portable, well-equipped “pro-class” notebook.

With the use of Intel’s Core i7 processor, the Qosmio X500 Series notebooks will take advantage of four cores of intelligent processing power, where it is aided by Intel’s Turbo Boost Technology while running on the latest Windows 7 operating system (which will be released sometime in October, of course). Intel’s Turbo Boost Technology will automatically enable the processor cores to run faster compared to the base operating frequency whenever it is operating below power, current and temperature specification limits, making it eke out maximum performance at all times. Apart from that, the use of ultra-fast DDR3 system memory, dual hard-drive configurations and NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M graphics with 1GB of GDDR5 video memory makes this one drool-worthy computing companion that is able to handle just about any game you throw at it, where the Qosmio X500 will churn out lightning-fast frame-rates and spew hi-definition video and audio faster and more efficiently than ever with smooth rendering and encoding.

Expect the Qosmio X500 Series notebook to arrive in store shelves from October 22nd onwards, although there is still no word on pricing. Don’t think this will be cheap though as it ought to hold its own against other equally powerful notebooks that are powered by the Intel Core i7 processor. You will be able to pick this up in Omega Black with stylish red chrome accents that will definitely turn heads no matter where you go.

Electronic Webcaster Gun: Like Spider-man, but creepier

If you are into arts and crafts, then you probably have at least one hot glue gun around the house. I never really thought about using a hot glue gun to make fake spiderwebs before, but it would appear that some company has re-packaged their hot glue guns for just such a purpose.

Obviously, this type of marketing is designed for Halloween, and if you need realistic webbing for your spooky party on October 31st, the Electronic Webcaster Gun is for you.

The package of twenty gluesticks can cover about 350 square feet, or one 12 x 15 foot room. The webs come in three types. You can choose Clear, which glows blue under black light. Neon Yellow, which glows yellow under black light, or simply choose Glow in the Dark.

Now, I’m not certain whether you can shoot your webs like Spider-man, but why would you want to? Unless you want to swing through New York City. With a name like Electric Webcaster Gun, it ought to shoot like the webslinger.

This is just one reason why I think the Electronic Webcaster Gun is not well named. The second reason is because it sounds like a product that can make you a professional podcaster.

This Webcaster Gun with six sticks costs $50, and replacement sticks are in packs of twenty for $6.

USB Posture Alert Reminder Keeps You from Leaning Forward

If you’re having issues with poor posture, it’s best to solve the issue as quickly as possible. Since bad posture when you’re at the computer all day can cause your back damage and cause shoulder pain. Which of course tends to lead to a pounding headache every so often. With this device, it’ll remind you to sit up straight when you need it. That’d be nice to have for those of you that zone out and forget to sit up straight.

Of course I see this as being the device most likely to be broken within a week of purchasing it. It’s not that I think it’s shotty craftsmanship, it’s just that if it reminds you when you’re already stressed out, it’s going to be far too tempting to break it. In order to remind you, it will show flashing LED lights and chime once when you’re leaning too close to your monitor. To keep it running just plug it into your USB port. It’s not an exact science, you could probably still get away with slouching, but it’ll at least keep you at a decent looking posture. You can purchase it for $21.99.

BenQ Releases G Series of LED Monitors

BenQ is well known for offering digital devices that are affordable and function well enough for entry level to mid-range products, but they rarely venture into anything high end. Well, this time round it is slightly different as BenQ makes inroads in the LED display revolution by rolling out a couple more monitor models from its G Series – the 19” W G920WL that has a 16:10 aspect ratio and the 18.5” W G922HDL which comes with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The former will be the first LED display in the world where the 18.5” size segment is concerned, and BenQ hopes that both offerings will have enough trappings without breaking the bank to make them the next monitor purchase of choice for millions around the globe. After all, they do boast the lowest power consumption rating in their respective size categories, making them appealing to eco-conscious corporate users who also want to do their bit for the environment with the G Series’ mercury-free, energy-efficient engineering.

The use of LED backlighting in the G Series translates to brilliant visuals that won’t cause your eyes to dry up and feel tired after a long day at the office. In fact, it could potentially increase productivity in the workplace. Interestingly enough, both the G920WL and G922HDL will exhibit zero light leakage that paves the way for an ultra-high dynamic contrast ratio (DCR) of 5 million:1. This near-infinite DCR would also mean super-intense blacks, brilliant whites, and innumerable color variations, making sure it is able to handle just about anything ranging from fine text to graphs, chart, and tables with aplomb in razor-sharp definition to boot. The inclusion of BenQ’s patented Senseye 3 Human Vision Technology also brings to the work desk one-touch optimization of image richness, clarity, and depth using preset modes calibrated to specific applications.

There is no word on pricing, but we do know that these displays ought to have made their way across China, Europe and the Asia Pacific from the middle of last month onwards.

Samsung makes YouTube available on Blu-ray players

Samsung knows that Blu-ray players are slowly but surely making inroads into living room of people all over the world, and has recently made available updates for their line of BD-P1600, BD-P3600 or BD-P4600 Blu-ray players to support YouTube for free. As long as your Samsung Blu-ray player falls under any of the three models mentioned and is connected to the Internet, you can now access YouTube and its entire collection of videos for free by simply pressing a single button on the remote control straight from the main screen. Apart from viewing the highest rated or most popular videos in a jiffy, you can also perform a search through an onscreen keypad. Guess the Blu-ray player is getting more functional than before despite relatively low adoption rates to date.

The Orbit USB Laptop Speaker

For being such a simple looking speaker, it still manages to somehow look great. There is really nothing out of the ordinary with its looks except that it doesn’t look like just another cheap plastic speaker. It actually looks like it’s created out of decent quality materials. No, it’s not in some goofy shape to show your love of Star Wars or something along those lines. Then again, perhaps that’s a good thing.

The speaker is small and meant to be plugged into your laptop for when you need a bit better sound quality. Anyone that’s ever owned a laptop is aware that they don’t exactly have stellar sound quality built into them. The speaker is plenty portable and is said to offer big sound. Which would make it easier when you want to listen to music or watch a movie on your laptop. Hopefully what they say is true too, since you’re going to get stuck paying $49.95 for the speaker.

USB Ultrasonic Mosquito Pest Repeller

I can never entirely decide what I think about electronic devices that are supposed to repel certain types of insects. One thing I do know though, is that I have heard several people swear by them. Well now here’s one to keep the mosquitoes away from you. I’m not sure why you’d need a USB device to do that, but perhaps your laptop has a pesky mosquito infestation. It could happen.

The USB device is definitely portable if nothing else, which is always nice. Just plug it into your USB port of your laptop or main PC and it will get to work. It doesn’t use any chemicals, so it’s a slightly more environmentally way to do things. At least according to the seller. Hey, you might just like to carry your laptop into the woods with you. Then this could be a perfectly practical gadget to have around. You can purchase it for $5.69 from UXSight.
