ePawn Arena set to be a game-changer

I’m sure that by now you are probably sick of hearing the term “game changer”, and I apologize for using this buzzword in the title. However, I guarantee you will like what this post is about.

While wandering the booths at CES last week, I discovered the ePawn Arena. It uses ePawn tracking technology for a large 26 inch IPS screen, which enables you to place game pieces for a very interesting gaming experience.

The demonstration showed an iPhone plugged into this thing, and the user could play a game using physical markers like chess pieces. The touchscreen seemed to know where these pieces were, and it creates a rather interesting environment for gaming.

The ePawn Arena is designed to link to smartphone, tablet, or PC and can be used for role-playing games and board games. This isn’t the first time that I have seen board games mixed with touchscreen interactive devices. After all, there was the Game Changer and Wowee’s AppGear, both of which had prominent appearances at CES.

The ePawn Arena is expected to be available in the “second half of the year”. I do’t seem to have a price, but the flyer I have on the product promises “patented technology provides state of the art performances at an affordable price”. Hopefully the average household can afford something such as this.

It seems that this is set to be the year of the Ultrabook, as companies that dabble with notebooks churn out one model after another with the intention of eating into Apple’s MacBook Air market. Dell does not want to be left out of the game either, and their latest foray into the Ultrabook market would come in the form of the Dell XPS 13. The XPS 13 is said to be the most compact 13.3″ Ultrabook to date, boasting an edge-to-edge glass, near “frameless” display, coupled with all-day battery life (claimed, and not tested yet) as well as all the relevant bells and whistles, crammed into a body that tips the scales at just 2.99 lbs, while measuring under 02.5″ at its thinnest point. 11-year old comes up with own iPad stand

There is just something precocious about 11-year olds and their imagination – at least we know one of them in the good ol’ USA is patriotic enough to observe that while many devices and other stuff are designed here, they are actually manufactured elsewhere. Of course, the economics of the situation might be a bit too heavy for him to understand at the moment, but at the very least, he is able to think out of the box by coming up with something that is made back in the US without losing any bit of functionality.

We’re talking about 11-year-old Dino Zaharakis, who intends to develop a stand that could place/remove a device without disconnecting its cable, hold a device with/without a skin in both portrait and landscape modes, have viewing angles that were optimized for video conferencing and manufactured back home, all the while being able to play nice with iPad, Kindle, nook, tablets, iPhone and other smartphones.

Dino actually came up with this iPad dock after seeing his dad use an impromptu one while discussing the family’s summer camp plans, where Dino quickly pointed out a bunch of design flaws while suggesting that he could do better. Naturally, his dad decided to challenge him, offering him a new phone if Dino could come up with an iPad dock and a web site. This catalyst caused Dino’s mind to move into high gear, where he manipulated pieces of aluminum stock from McMaster-Carr, using a Home Depot miter saw and a vise. He made several prototypes. E-ink concept could change the face of newspapers

I think we all know that newspapers are dying. However, it may be something that will always be around in some form, like radio.

This is a concept newspaper that uses E-ink with a semi-transparent surface. Basically, it is creates a display on a surface that looks just like a newspaper, but won’t leave any black ink residue on your hands.

There is a video after the break if you want to see it for yourself. It uses a fingerprint identifier to see who the user is, and then it looks like you are surfing the web.

I believe that this is what Apple wanted to do with the iPad, but bigger. Considering that the iPad already does what the iPhone can do, but bigger, maybe this will be the iPaper. iPaper. I like that, and it could easily catch on.

However, I’m not certain whether people will open up to a huge folding display that is actually larger than most mobile devices. After all, newspapers are very large and bulky, and they take up way to much tabletop space. We might be at the point where people prefer to have something on a smaller screen rather than a larger one.

Still, I guess I like any technology that looks like it is out of Minority Report, and showed up a few times in that film.

Robot Report: Getting more human all the time

The last time we talked about Robovie, we mentioned that he looked like he was ready to take over all of us fleshy humans.

It would appear that Robovie-R, a robot that is designed to assist the elderly, has been upgraded to Version 3 which now stands 120 cm tall and weighs 43 kg.

Sorry I don’t have more information about the mouth robot, here is some more specs about the Robovie. It has eleven touch sensors, two USB cameras (one for each eye), two mono mics (one for each ear) 17 joints, a speaker in the mouth, networking capability, and can travel 2.5 km per hour.

I think it is proof that robots are getting more human all the time. In fact, let’s combine the mouth with the body of the Robovie. Or maybe we should just stick with the speaker on the mouth, as the robo-mouth just freaks me out.

Sorry if I can’t get over that mouth-bot. It just looks like something from The City of Lost Children or something. However, that Robovie could assist the elderly, and that’s good, right? I’m trying to dispel my robot fears.

T-OLED makes transparent glass a display

I think we all know that we are heading for an era where every pane of glass will be a display of some type. I mean, if there is one thing science fiction has taught us: no glass shall go to waste on something as mundane as a window.

It would appear that some Korean technology could make this a reality with transparent OLED or T-OLED. The purpose is to make a touch-sensitive transcreen.

I believe the intention is to make something that would be put on a windshield. I’ve heard that Microsoft has been working on that one.

For some reason, I always see this technology applied to automobile windshields. It’s like we can’t tolerate dashboard instrumentation anymore, or something. Yeah, I suppose we just got to have heads-up displays.

Most of these displays have involved some sort of tiny projector, which has been the only way you could get images on glass. I don’t see how the image on the device in the photo, but all those circuit boards below might be an indicator.

Personally, I want to see this on every window, mirror, or any other place where there is glass of any type. Of course, call me a dreamer. Of course, OLED technology is very expensive. Have you seen the price of OLED TVs these days?

Solar Powered Window Alarm

I’m always all about any gadget that can function well, while being powered by nothing more than the sun. It cuts down on batteries and it’s basically the lazy man’s way of being eco-friendly. In that you really don’t have to put in a whole lot of effort and you’re managing to at least help to not make the earth any worse than its current state. That being said, I’m not entirely sold on this solar gadget. Since it is an alarm, it almost seems like it’s advertising its presence to burglars.

Sure, it’ll go off anytime someone opens the window at all. However, I’m curious if someone were to break a windowpane next to the solar panel and were to just shut it off or tear it off, if it would do any good. Then again many people looking at it from the outside would probably think it’s just a harmless solar gadget probably charging your cellphone. Which if that’s the case, it could still work. These window alarms come in twin packs for £24.99 or about $38.

Aluratek e-book reader, the Libre, hands-on

The Libre isn’t the first e-book reader that I have reviewed, and I must admit that I have reviewed few of them. I didn’t find the Libre from Aluratek to be different from the last one that I reviewed.

Then again, last year brought about more e-readers than I think the general public really wanted, as most were only turning to Amazon’s Kindle to satisfy their e-reading needs. I suppose that this will be the year of the tablet and its derivatives.

But I digress. I will discuss what the Libre does that is different. According to the company, the Libre’s 5 inch black and white screen has “the same appearance and readibility” of printed paper. Since it has no backlight, it is just like reading a book. I think that most other e-book readers can do that, actually.

I do like the way that the Libre wants the first-time e-book user to get reading. It is made to be set up to get an easy Internet connection so you can download many free titles from ebook sites from googlebooks.com and gutenberg.org. The Libre also comes with a 2GB SD Card with 100 titles on it. You can see a complete list here.

The battery life is good for 24 hours worth of reading, and it can also do music files. No big surprise there, as for the support of BMP, JPG, GIF, MP3, and animated GIF picture format. I do like the page turning controller on the left hand side, which feels a little like turning the pages of a real book.

You should be able to get the Aluratek Libre for about $150-$170 on Amazon, and many other retail stores.

Berlin Brain Computer Interface lets you play pinball, with your mind

This is an odd way to play pinball, don’t you think? Shouldn’t this man be standing in front of the machine? And what’s with that wired bathing cap?

This is probably what I would have said if I was at CeBIT 2010 and passed by this display of the Berlin Brain-Computer Interface. As it turns out, this man is playing this game of pinball with his brain. I’m not saying that he’s really getting his head into the game, but his head is playing the game.

You can watch a video of the setup of this person in action after the jump. I really have no idea if this man is just some visitor to CeBIT or someone who works for the company, but you can watch him as they set him up to play pinball on this Addams Family themed pinball machine. Yeah, I would have chosen a different theme, but the multiple flippers does make it interesting.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really an explanation about how this works on the video, which has absolutely no voiceover narration. I have no idea if you have to think: “Left flipper, right flipper” to get it to work. I notice that this user has to manually start the ball rolling, and I’m guessing that mentally tilting is not an option.

I suppose we are probably looking at an age where arcade games make a comeback, and the players are jacked into them mentally. That, or come up with a console version of this mental controls. I suppose that this could be the next version of Project Natal.

Apple iPad to hit the US this April 3

It seems that in recent years, anything that Apple comes up with seems to generate a whole lot of publicity. We can’t really blame them for making good on their range of devices though, delivering quality as well as the most important of them all – a fantastic user experience which appeals to the broadest user base. Well, the iPad which was unveiled a couple of months ago certainly raised quite a furore amongst the general population, but there are also the fair share of detractors. Well, fans of the iPad will be pleased to know that the magical and revolutionary device is tipped to hit the US market on April 3rd, although this is limited to just its Wi-Fi models while others who want the high end Wi-Fi + 3G models will have to wait until the end of April. As for people living in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, they will be able to get their hands on the iPad in late April as well.

Too lazy to queue up at an Apple Store and fight with the crowd? You can always place your pre-order for both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store from March 12th onwards. With prices starting from $499 upwards, we do wonder whether the iPad will do well based on its merits alone and not because of all the hype generated over the past few months. To recap, the iPad is capable of letting users browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games and read ebooks among others. It measures all of 0.5″ thin which makes it a snap to slide it into a MacBook Air case without any trouble, while the 1.5 pounds weight makes it the thinnest and lightest device out there when compared to any netbook (of course, this is comparing apples and oranges – pun intended), since it can do many things the netbook already does.

Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-G10

While we looked at the Lumix DMC-G2 yesterday, here is yet another fellow Micro Four Thirds camera from the Japanese consumer electronics giant, Panasonic. We’re talking about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10 here, where it is touted to be the lightest digital interchangeable lens camera with a viewfinder in the world. Don’t be mistaken though – even though it is the lightest, that doesn’t mean all of its functionalities have been stripped away – no sir, the Lumix DMC-G10 comes packed with a host of advanced digital camera functions that were specially designed to be easy-to-use for users who are new to system cameras. Being compact and portable, the Lumix G10 is also able to record High Definition (HD) video in addition to snapping high-quality still images.

The original ReviveLite would work fine for most people, but the down side of it is that it was pretty bulky. Not only did it keep an outlet covered, but it also had a dock off to the side of the outlet. With this 2nd edition ReviveLite it looks a whole lot more sleek and won’t be quite as much in the way. This new design makes a whole lot more sense than the old one did.

Just like the old one it offers a night light to make wandering around in the dark much easier. The smaller version has one other nice change, it has been designed to include a USB port. That USB port can charge all sorts of other gadgets, all the while you can be powering up your iPod or iPhone on the dock. Plus, since it’s so small, it’d be a very portable device to have around. So the yearly cycle continues, with yet another iPod being updated this time round. Apple’s event at San Francisco saw the appearance of Steve Jobs to the masses, and it goes without saying the man had a hand in unveiling the latest iPod nano to the crowds, now in its fifth iteration. What makes the iPod nano so special this time round? Well, Apple has decided to throw in a video camera, a microphone and a speaker to what is already deemed as the most popular portable media player in the world, allowing music aficionados to shoot short video clips (limited by its memory, of course) regardless of where they are. These video clips can then be viewed over the computer after performing a quick and painless transfer, and further uploaded onto YouTube if you’re so inclined.

According to Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, “iPod nano is the world’s most popular music player with over 100 million sold. And now we’ve added a video camera to its incredibly thin design, without any additional cost to the user.” New owners of the 5G iPod nano will be pleased to know that it comes with a larger 2.2″ display to make navigation easier on the eyes, while you get to enjoy more album art alongside the ability to shoot and view video clips in a jiffy. Apple has also included fun real-time effects in one’s video content including Thermal, Film Grain, Kaleido and X-Ray without the need to process it all over again using specialized software on a computer later on. I’ve always been one that leaves various notes lying around. Despite that I’m on my computer quite often I’ve never really gotten into typing notes out. I prefer bright yellow post-it notes. However, the down side is that sometimes I just need the info written down for a couple of minutes and it seems a waste to use a whole note for that purpose. Which leaves me with post-it notes with all kinds of things scribbled out and written in the corners. Instead of going that messy route, you could pick up this mouse pad. It’s definitely a quirky design, but it’d be great to write something down in a rush.

Epson has just announced a couple of 1080p front projectors for the masses in North America, where they are the PowerLite Home Cinema 8100 and 8500 UB to further expand its 3LCD home theater projector family. Both models will come with D7 technology for brilliant color and detail, alongside a higher contrast ratio count with the Home Cinema 8100 reaches a 36,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio while the Home Cinema 8500 UB manages to achieve an unprecedented 200,000:1 figure. Both the Home Cinema 8100 and 8500 UB will also boast the latest technologies in real color reproduction capabilities which ought to keep home entertainment and AV enthusiasts more than satisfied.

USB speakers are pretty much a dime a dozen anymore. Most definitely fall into the boring category, but they all have their ways that they attempt to stand out from the crowd. Well these are probably going to appeal to the Transformer fans out there. This seems more like it’s for the younger Transformer fans, but I’m sure that won’t stop the hardcore fans that love these speakers anyway.

This 3 pound speaker just sits closed up when it’s not in use. Then when you want to use the speakers, there are two spots on either side of his head that open up. In addition to the Optimus Prime head, there will also be Ultra Magnus. Being just your average USB speakers, they’re probably not going to have fantastic sound to please those that are picky. BlackBerry Tour now on Verizon Wireless

BlackBerry continues the good fight against Apple’s iPhone and numerous other Windows Mobile handsets by making available their latest release, the 3G BlackBerry Tour from RIM. This model will arrive on Verizon wireless Communications stores come this July 12th, where it is going for a $199.99 price point after a $70 mail-in rebate as well as a new 2-year contract. At that price which is similar to the new iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre, it would be interesting to see this tussle work itself out when consumers vote with their wallets. Will the BlackBerry Tour be able to hold its ground or even win some more market share for RIM? Motorola Aura Celebrates Moon Landing with the Celestial Edition

For those of you who don’t know, the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11, the first landing on the moon, is this year, on this very month, to be exact.

I suppose it is only fitting that Motorola has put out a special version of the Aura to commemorate this historic event. It is called the Celestial Edition, and it includes the historic audio clips.

I’m sure you know the clips I’m talking about: “that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. By the way, I heard that Neil Armstrong actually screwed up his famous line, as he was supposed to say: “that’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”. Makes more sense that way, doesn’t it? I mean, he might as well have said: “one small step for man, one giant leap for man”.

By the way, I have just learned that Motorola was the company that provided the original radio transponder aboard the Eagle as it landed. In other words, they own the rights to moon transmission. Just kidding. I really hope that is public domain.

I think Motorola also got the video footage from the moon too. I always wondered how they got the camera several feet away from the lunar lander for that historic walk. Maybe they were faked. Also just kidding.

Anyway, the Motorola Aura Celestial Edition should be out soon, but no word about price or availability.

I suppose that this next gadget is really for those who want to pay a high price for a puzzle. What you see in this photo here is the MNEMOSYNE 16 gigabyte USB storage cube.

Yes, that’s right, somehow all those pieces will come together to create a cube. Yeah, it brings me back to those days of mental puzzles in the 80’s like the Rubik’s Cube, the Missing Link, and others of its type.

When it is assembled correctly, you will be able to have the USB key that you have been looking for. Yeah, I’m not certain why you would want a storage device like this, nor would you want to pay such a high price for it. Check it out after the jump.

So how much is it? Try 1,000,000 yen, otherwise known as $10,442! I can’t believe that one. I guess if you can solve this puzzle, then you have solved the ultimate puzzle: how to obtain unlimited wealth.

I don’t understand why this is so high on the price scale. Of course, I don’t know where the actual meat of memory of this device is. Not only that, why do you need to assemble it to find the key? Isn’t it on one of the pieces?

Despite that my computer set up is definitely complicated, I have always had more of a preference for the clean simple look when it comes to my desk. It’s just far easier for me to concentrate when I don’t have a lot of clutter and it’s even better to have all of the cords hidden away. So for me this desk won’t work due to the way I have things, but it’d be perfect for a student or even a home office that doesn’t require anything but your laptop.

The HP eSkins

One of the issues with our electronic devices is their lack of individuality. Every electronic device, be it mobile phone, MP3 player, or laptop, comes shipped to us exactly alike, unless you buy a “limited edition”. Perhaps this is why HP has created the Electronic Skin, or eSkin, a flexible color film that can be applied to mobile phones, MP3 Players, digital cameras, notebooks, and netbooks.

HP uses roll-to-roll manufacturing to make the eSkin, and it has an electronically controlled color surface. It would appear that HP is marketing this for other businesses so they can tag their product with their print-quality colors and logos, which have visibility in direct sunlight and can shift electronically into a transparent state.
Personally, I think HP should target the eSkin to consumers, so that a user can put a personal touch on his or her electronic device. I wouldn’t mind putting a picture of my kids on my cellular phone, actually.

In all honesty, I am having a hard time picturing what eSkins actually are. Much of what you see here comes straight from the Press Release, but I am hoping they are more than just transparent stickers.

I’m still looking forward to the day where we have eSkins with animations, like the technology seen in the film Minority Report. Man, I swear I can’t get through an article without mentioning that film.

The HP eSkins have only recently been unveiled at DisplayWeek 2009. So far, there is no word on availability or price.

JVC Launches New Full HD LCD Monitor for Digital SLR Users

Known as the Panasonic DMP-B15, this model aims to offer the definitive High Definition Blu-ray experience for those on the go, coming with a high quality 8.9″ WSVGA LCD display that will feature Panasonic’s very own VIERA CAST Internet accessibility and BD Live functionality, in addition to an SD memory card slot. Sony Unveils PSP Go

Looks like Sony can’t really keep their secrets from leaking out to the public before the official announcement, as image leaks as well as whispers of the PSP go were already making their rounds well ahead of the E3 announcement. Well, for those who recently picked up a Sony PSP-3000 (yes, it is in its third iteration already for that particular generation), there is a new device that looks set to displace the PSP-3000 in due time - assuming it does crazily well, of course. We’re guessing that Sony is taking Nintendo’s similar approach as they did all those years ago, touting the DS Phat to be the “third pillar”, only bringing it to the forefront and discontinuing the Game Boy line when the DS was found to be doing exceptionally well. Only time will tell, but let us take a look at the Sony PSP go in greater detail today.

The PSP go will arrive in stores for folks living in North America this October 1, while Europe/PAL territories and Asian countries will get theirs a month later, retailing for $249 and an equivalent amount in Euros, of course. As stated earlier, the PSP go will co-exist with the PSP-3000 in retail stores as gamers as well as those who are curious learn to decide which is the best possible portable gaming system for them. What makes the PSP go different is it won’t come with any UMD drive - instead, it will ditch all disc-based content by catering to those who want on-demand entertainment, featuring 16GB of internal memory as well as the ability to receive digital entertainment via the PlayStation Network. Sounds fine and dandy, but what about less developed markets where over-the-air download speeds are excruciatingly slow? Guess those folks will just have to settle for regular PSP-3000s.

Dell Unleashes Power of Alienware M17x

It is nice to know that ever since Dell bought over extreme gaming brand Alienware, they haven’t really affected the company’s performance in any way. Dell still churns out reliable (for most people, anyways - there are always horror stories to tell of any brand in this world) notebooks and desktops for millions of people around the world each day, and Alienware sticks to what it does best - working on drool-worthy gaming machines that cost a bomb, and yet people won’t mind forking out good money for it due to the overall aesthetics as well as performance that come in a single package. Having said that, Alienware has rolled out yet another masterpiece today - the Alienware M17x gaming notebook that is set to blow your mind away.
While the M17x isn’t exactly the best kept secret in the world, it is nice to get an official announcement, where Dell has touted it to be the “most powerful laptop in the universe.” That’s surely stating their faith that advanced alien civilizations out there don’t exist - but that’s a different can of worms for another day. Acer Aspire One To Run Google Android

It looks like Google is about to give Microsoft a run for their money on another front - the netbook. Both Acer and Asustek have adopted Android and will be releasing netbooks running Android next quarter:

Acer Inc., the world’s second-largest laptop maker, will release a low-cost notebook powered by Android next quarter, Jim Wong, head of information-technology products at the Taipei- based company, said yesterday.

USB Flash Drive Transforms into Ravage

One of my favorite Transformers was Ravage, one of several pet robots from Soundwave. In case you don’t know who Soundwave is, he was a Decepticon (the bad robots) who could turn into a cassette recorder. Soundwave had a bunch of tapes that he could miraculously store inside him, and Ravage could turn into some sort of demon cat.

Of course, no one uses cassettes anymore. I suppose that Soundwave’s minions could be CDs, but how are they going to transform into robots? Even if they were to morph like the T-1000, CDs are becoming an outdated medium.

I suppose in a modern world of Transformers, Soundwave would probably transform into an MP3 player, but what would his tape/minions be? How about something that could store MP3s, like a USB Flash Drive.

You have to admit, my logic makes a lot of sense. The Ravage Transformers USB Flash Drive comes with 2GB worth of storage, and is compatible with Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, and the Mac.

You should be able to pre-order the Ravage Transformers USB Flash Drive for $42.99. For an extra $2, it will ship in some collector’s grade packaging, so it can sit on the shelf and build up value as a collector’s item.

Oddly enough, it won’t ship until September, which is long after Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen will be in the theaters. I would have thought that this Flash Drive would be released in tandem with the would-be successful movie sequel, but I’m guessing we won’t see Ravage in it. Too bad. He would have looked neat as a CG charater.

Starboard WT-1 Interactive Wireless Tablet

I was fortunate enough to receive an email from Hitachi announcing the Starboard WT-1 Interactive Wireless Tablet. Users can connect up to seven WT-1 systems to a PC, and it appears to be designed for “educational facilities and corporate environments”.

Users then have a wireless range of up to 30 feet via RF technology, and it will give presenters the ability to “create interactive and dynamic presentations”. The user operates the WT-1 with an interactive pen, two customizable buttons, and 16 shortcut function keys.

Other features include search engine integration, handwriting recognition, and the ability to advance PowerPoint slides with a function button. As for a battery life, it lasts about 16 hours, and will alert the user of a low battery with a built-in LCD indicator screen.

The WT-1 is very light, weighing approximately one pound, and measures in at 10.9” x 11.1” x 0.8”. From what I see, the WT-1 appears to be marketed to educators, presenters, and other related business people. It certainly looks like something plucked from the classroom or business of the future.

If you would like to see the WT-1 Interactive Wireless Tablet in action, then you should probably attend InfoComm 2009, where it will make its planned debut. There is no word on a price or availability.

The Nest Box with IR Camera

Is there anything more bonding to a father/son relationship than the building of a birdhouse? Maybe before the digital age, but now the birdhouse has been made technologically efficient.

As you can see, this nest box has tiny camera inside of it, so you can actually see what is going on inside of it. It is an IR camera, so you can view what is going on during the night and the day.

This camera also has a transmitter with a range of 328 feet to the included base station. This base station can be connected to any display with RCA input, and you can watch a nest like it was a Discovery Channel program.

Of course, there is no guarantee that you will have some good footage of the birdies with this peeping tom camera. I wonder if the birds have any idea that they and their babies are on a reality TV show. You might want to figure out a way to record it, as you could easily miss the episode where the eggs hatch.

You will have to connect the camera to a power supply, unless you want to use the battery pack. By the way, the battery pack is only good for about two hours. The Nest Box with IR Camera is available at the Pro-Idee site for about $211.

Some people like to say that "size doesn't matter." We think that those people have never seen the gigapixel photographs taken with a GigaPan Epic Sytem. David Bergman, a self-described "All Access" photographer took his GigaPan Epic to the recent inauguration of President Barack Obama:

My final photo is made up of 220 Canon G10 images and the file is 59,783 X 24,658 pixels or 1,474 megapixels. It took more than six and a half hours for the Gigapan software to put together all of the images on my Macbook Pro and the completed TIF file is almost 2 gigabytes.

The New 70 Series Samsung Monitors

With so many LCD monitors to choose from these days, what are some of the choices available to the common man? Well, Samsung has just added to your headache by compounding the “problem” with a trio of new 70 Series Monitors, and they are the P2070, P2370 and P2370HD. Two of these slim LCD monitors will feature a screen depth of 30mm, while the P2370HD is measured at 65.5mm. The three of them will also boast Samsung’s very own Touch of Color (ToC) design. The 70 Series of LCD monitors were meant to impart the performance capability of Samsung TVs onto the average desktop, as more and more people take up the option to view their TV shows on a computer in addition to using it for daily productivity tasks.

All three models of the 70 Series Monitors will come with a dynamic contrast ratio (50,000:1) for deep, rich colors, while the 2ms (GTG) video response time minimizes blurring for watching sports and fast-moving gameplay. The inclusion of its crystal-like bezel frame complete with ToC helps reduce the reflection of light and glare for a more comfortable viewing experience. Samsung designers also decided to make the monitor look as though it was floating in mid-air thanks to a clear, crystal-like acrylic neck.

Samsung has also integrated its very own Startlight Touch Controls in terms of the On Screen Display (OSD) buttons being merged into the bezel itself, making the entire monitor feel and look like one seamless device without any ugly obtrusive buttons on the front or sides. There is no word on pricing or availability for all three 70 Series LCD TVs as at press time, but you’ll be pleased to know they come with a suite of eco-conscious features such as reduced energy consumption, making it sip around 33% less power to operate against standard monitors of similar size. Guess you can shortlist the Samsung 70 Series if you’re looking to upgrade your monitor in the near future.

The Dexim DWP005 Hub Dock Station

Instead of just plugging your usual iPod cord into your computer, there is now this Dexim DWP005. In some ways it initally looks like it’d just take up space. However, it’s slim, it’d keep your iPhone/iPod in the upright position, plus best of all it has other devices built into it. Giving you even more functions and a nice sleek dock to pop your iPod into. Since it is so sleek, you have the added perk of it being easy to just toss into your laptop bag for traveling purposes.

In addition to being a charger, it has a memory card reader and a 3-port USB hub built-in. Plus it has provided cables that work for devices that use micro and mini USB ports to recharge, such as the Blackberry. All around it gives quite a lot of function on a very small device. Sadly though, it is a bit pricey. It’ll cost you $69.99, which does seem a bit on the steep side. However, it offers quite a bit of functionality for that price.

Panasonic has finally announced the pricing of its new Micro Four Thirds digital camera, the LUMIX DMC-GH1, where it will hit retail stores sometime early this June for a rather expensive $1,499.95. Well, at that price point, you not only get full High Definition video recording capability, you will also benefit from the inclusion of the LUMIX G VARIO 14-140mm/F4.0-5.8 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S. lens as part of the kit. This new lens will boast a silent motor and continuous auto focusing (AF) capability, making it fundamentally different from standard DSLRs.

For folks residing in the US, they will be able to pick up the LUMIX GH1 in the very same color that Henry Ford allowed the Model T to be available - black. Well, as mom always says, never judge a book by its cover, so let us put aside thoughts about black being the only color choice and concentrate on what else the LUMIX DMC-GH1 has to offer - the ability to record AVCHD 1080p/24p High Definition video, Panasonic’s iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, shutter speed adjustment during motion recording, aperture control that makes it convenient whenever there are several subjects at varying distances, letting one shoot both videos and photos that focus on the foreground and blur the background or vice versa in a jiffy.

WiPC

It was only yesterday when we reported on the concept MID (Mobile Internet Device) designed by Jan Rytir. Now take a gander at the WiPC, designed by BlueRadios Inc.

WiPC? Because there is apparently a need for wireless mobile broadband devices, that’s why. Okay, that joke didn’t really work, but who wouldn’t want “access to Internet-based information and entertainment content as well as voice, data, and video communications”.

Of course, one of the limitations to the WiPC or any MID is that tiny screen to surf the net with. Fortunately, this WiPC has a high-resolution color liquid crystal micro display, and superior magnifying optics coupled with some video technology can create a “virtual 15 inch image”. I’m not certain how that is possible to enlarge that image of that size.

Still, you’ve got to admire the miniaturization process that BlueRadios has accomplished. According to the company president and CEO Mark Kramer, they have reduced a typical 5 pound laptop down to 3 ounces. Not bad.

This product will be available to “OEMs and large consumer electronics distributors with advanced operating systems such as Windows, Android, or Linux”. It can also support Bluetooth 3.5G, WiFi, and GPS. There is no word on a price as yet. Anyone want to comment with an estimate?
